In 1737, a settler named Nicholas Kern came to this region — the land of the Lenape people — and established a sawmill. In the years that followed, none other than Benjamin Franklin would purchase Kern’s timber. By the 1840s, more people had arrived, attracted by the deposits of slate around the community. In 1845, a slate quarry had been established, and soon thereafter, a factory was set up. Slatington, PA, was established as a borough in 1864. In the years that followed, this borough became known for not only stone and timber but also knit goods, iron and silk.
Among the historic sites of Slatington is the Fireman’s Drinking Fountain, a fountain and statue of a firefighter carrying a child and lantern. This fountain was built in 1909 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
