Fur trader and merchant Alexander Macomb purchased the land that would become Watertown in 1791. Macomb lived in New York City, and he sent surveyors to examine his purchase. They determined it presented fine land for timber and mills. By 1798, cabins were being built there. In 1816, Watertown was incorporated as a village, and 53 years later, it became a city.
In 1850, the Paddock Arcade opened. It is the oldest continuously operating enclosed mall in the U.S. Watertown is also the birthplace of Little Trees, the popular car air fresheners!
