In 1806, four farmers purchased land from George Scriba, a German immigrant who encouraged the settlement of land in his patent, which encompassed parts of what is Oswego and Oneida County today. The land this group of farmers bought became West Monroe in 1839 from part of Constantia. In West Monroe’s early years, lumber was the primary industry. The community grew quickly throughout the 19th century, bringing clergy, coopers, blacksmiths, shoemakers, carpenters, stonemasons, farmers and merchants. Farming and other industries declined in the 20th century, and West Monroe has become a predominately residential community.
