You might be aware that Caledonia was the name that the Roman Empire used to refer to Scotland — so it stands to reason that the first European settlers of this village were Scottish. They arrived in 1797, and the town was incorporated six years later. (However, it was called Southampton until 1891.)

Caledonia has the oldest fish hatchery in the United States. The Caledonia Fish Hatchery (aka, Spring Brook and the Seth Green State Hatchery) was established by Seth Green — a pioneer in the farming of fish and advocate for preserving fish populations — in 1864. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
