Kerosene is a fuel oil distilled at extremely high temperatures from crude oil, just like heating oil, diesel and gasoline. It is a clear fuel with a lower “gel point” than traditional heating oil. That means that it won’t thicken as easily when outdoor temperatures drop below freezing.
For centuries (long before its name and distillation process were patented), kerosene was used for lamplight, cooking and a variety of farm functions. It currently has a lot of commercial uses, including as jet fuel and as an industrial cleaner.
While it’s possible to blend kerosene and heating oil for your home heating equipment, using pure kerosene in a system intended for traditional heating oil can cause considerable damage.
