[April 22, 2025] — Mirabito Energy Products is proud to announce the successful completion of its March Mirabito Cares Round Up campaign, which raised $60,000 to support local food banks and help fight hunger in the communities we serve.
Throughout the month of March, customers at all 109 Mirabito Convenience Store locations were invited to round up their purchases at checkout. Proceeds from the campaign benefited three regional food banks: the Food Bank of Central New York, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. Thanks to the generosity of customers and an additional contribution from Mirabito, each organization received $20,000 to further their mission of feeding individuals and families in need.
The impact of this campaign is significant—providing more than 200,000 meals across Mirabito’s service area. With every dollar raised, the food banks are able to increase purchasing power, improve food distribution, and ensure access to nutritious items including proteins, produce, dairy, and pantry staples. Importantly, the donations will directly support the communities where Mirabito operates. Funds raised will benefit programs in specific counties aligned with Mirabito’s footprint—such as Chenango, Cortla
nd, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego through the Food Bank of Central New York; Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins through the Food Bank of the Southern Tier; and Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie counties via the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. This targeted approach ensures that the support stays local and strengthens the programs serving our neighbors across these regions.

What Are Heating Oil and Kerosene?
Heating oil is an extremely safe home fuel. In its liquid form, it cannot explode. An oil burner needs to vaporize heating oil at extremely high temperatures to make it combust.
Heating oil generates nearly 140,000 Btu of heat energy per gallon. That’s just about the most heat you can get from a home fuel. This fuel powers furnaces, boilers and water heating systems. And our heating oil is more efficient and eco-friendly than ever before. Mirabito Energy Products delivers Bioheat® fuel, a blend of ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and renewable biodiesel. Heating oil typically must be stored in an oil tank located inside your home. This fuel shouldn’t be exposed to extreme cold because it can “gel” or thicken into a waxy substance, leading to service issues with your heating equipment. If you have an outdoor tank (or a mobile home), you may be better off with kerosene or a kerosene-heating oil blend. Kerosene is an oil distillate with a much lower “gel” point.
How Does Propane Compare to Heating Oil?
Propane is a liquified petroleum gas that is stored under pressure in an outdoor propane tank. When your heating system or gas appliance needs fuel, pressure is relieved in the tank, and the propane travels as a gas to the burner.

When winter weather arrives in our part of the country, it does not mess around. Even when we aren’t facing blustery snow from a raging nor’easter or lake effect bands, we’re still contending with days on end of sub-freezing temperatures. Reliable, effective home heating is an absolute necessity.

How Much Heat Does Heating Oil Produce?
Heating oil is a fantastic generator of household warmth. The best way to measure heat generation is by Btu (British thermal unit). One Btu is the amount of heat needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
A single gallon of heating oil can produce 138,500 Btu of heat energy. That’s the equivalent amount of heat produced by roughly 134 cubic feet of natural gas or 41 kilowatt hours of electricity. It’s an incredible amount of warmth!
How Does a Heating Oil System Keep You Warm?
Your furnace or boiler’s burner clicks on when the temperature drops in your home, and your thermostat signals the heating system to start. A fuel pump draws heating oil through a filter into your burner, where it’s turned into a fine spray, mixed with air and ignited in the combustion chamber.
In its liquid form, heating oil won’t ignite on its own. Indeed, if you were to drop a lit match into a bucket of liquid heating oil, it would go out like it was dropped in water.
Once the burner is on, the combustion chamber heats up. In furnaces, a heat exchanger absorbs this heat, and a blower fan distributes warm air through ducts into your rooms. In boilers, the hot combustion chamber heats water, which circulates as either hot water or steam through plumbing to radiators or baseboards. The process repeats until the thermostat reaches the desired temperature, while emissions are vented safely outdoors through a flue.
Today’s oil-fired heating systems are more efficient than ever. Homeowners today use an average of 500 fewer gallons of oil each year to heat their homes compared to 30 years ago.
How Has Heating Oil Changed Over the Years?
Heating oil is more eco-friendly than it has ever been. All heating oil today is ultra-low-sulfur, which means it contains 99% less sulfur than it used to. The introduction of ultra-low-sulfur heating oil has improved air quality and allowed for the development of more efficient heating systems.
We’re also seeing the widespread incorporation of biofuels into heating oil. Most conventional propane is a co-product of natural gas processing and oil refining.
