Every home is unique, just like every family. Depending on the age, layout, insulation level and surrounding climate of your home, the heating and cooling systems you need may be considerably different from another household in another part of the Northeast.

More and more homeowners are installing heat pumps, an all-in-one electric heating and cooling option. Mirabito sells and installs these cutting-edge products, and we can help you find a model that works for your home.

How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump system transfers heat from one place to another using minimal energy (as opposed to boilers and furnaces, which generate heat). In colder months, it draws heat from the outside air and brings it indoors to warm your home. In warmer months, the process reverses— it removes heat from inside your home and releases it outside, keeping your space cool and comfortable. This dual-purpose functionality makes heat pumps a highly efficient alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems.

Ductless versus Ducted Heat Pumps

You can install a heat pump regardless of whether or not your home has ductwork.

A ducted heat pump efficiently heats and cools your home by using ducts to distribute air. In cooler months, it extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it to a central unit, which circulates warm air through the ducts. For cooling, the heat is extracted from your home and expelled through the central unit. This system provides consistent, even temperature control throughout your home.

Ductless heat pumps involve an outdoor condenser/compressor unit and one or several indoor air handler units. The indoor and outdoor units connect via thin conduits through the wall. These systems tend to be adaptable to virtually any size or shape of space with a relatively quick and simple installation. Additionally, you can typically control each air handler separately, allowing for efficient “zoned” heating and cooling.

Can Heat Pumps Be Your Main Heating and Cooling System?

Heat pumps provide amazing, efficient air conditioning, but whether they can be your only home heating option depends on your home and climate. Heat pump technology has improved a lot in recent years, allowing more homes to use these systems in our part of the country.

Some people have experienced less effective heating from heat pump systems when outdoor temperatures are extremely cold. For this reason, many households choose to hold onto their furnace or boiler as a backup heating option for the coldest times of the year.
